In the heart of Dallas, where sartorial pursuits are a favorite pastime, the perfect pair of denim cut-off shorts are a requisite for a stylish summer. A savant has emerged in that very space. With an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage denim brands, styles and fits, Caitlin Brackeen has made a name for herself as “The Denim Whisperer.”

AAVintage on Henderson Avenue

She has quietly channeled her passion for vintage denim into a curated haven, AAVintedge on Henderson Ave. Inside these doors, your quest for the perfect pair of summer cut-offs breaks free from the tyranny of traditional size charts. After giving you a perfunctory once-over, Caitlin will return with a selection of cut-offs that will fit as if they were custom made for you. Each pair is in fact cut in-house. Side note: Caitlin’s mom crafts halter tops from the scraps that create the perfect warm-weather double-denim moment. It’s an empowering concept that’s ushering in a new era of personal style and independence that feels inextricably entwined with Texas attitude and authenticity.

The Perfect Summer Cut-offs

When it comes to cut-offs for summer 2025, Caitlin shares what her customers are wanting, plus her tips on finding your perfect pair:

TTE: Is there a particular style or fit of cut-offs that’s in high demand this summer?

CB/TDW: This summer I am seeing a demand for longer shorts—almost knee length and definitely a little roomier for that boyfriend-y look. Though I still am selling shorter styles really well!

TTE: What are some style or fit tips for shoppers who are hesitant to wear shorts or who don’t typically wear shorts and think they “can’t” wear shorts?

CB/TDW: If a client feels exposed in a pair of shorts and is hesitant to style them for their lifestyle, I often suggest pairing them with a nice tailored long-sleeve button-up. Sheer fabrics or lightweight linens still keep us cool, but they offer a more polished feel with shorts rather than a tee or tank. Also wearing a taller boot with a short offers more leg coverage that can be comforting for some clients.

TTE: Is there a style of cut-off that you find to be the most universally flattering?

CB/TDW: Again I feel like there is really no wrong answer when it comes to a vintage cutoff. I think the most classic is a slightly fitted waist and a looser thigh area creating a slight a-line to the shorts. That fit tends to be elongating and flattering to many shapes.

TTE: Are there particular features of cut-offs that flatter different frames?

CB/TDW: The client’s shape and preferences dictate which shorts can be most flattering. I do find that sometimes the A-line style can be a bit balloon-y on a more athletic frame, so I try to get a more unisex straight-cut short on a straighter frame. For example, I am built quite straight, therefore I tend to favor a 501 or a 505 as opposed to a client with a little bit more hip, which is best flattered in a Levi’s 550 or 560 or something similar.

TTE: What’s your favorite way to style cut-offs for summer?

CB/TDW: I usually pair my cutoffs with a more tailored or structured top. I enjoy a thick black leather belt with a larger buckle. I like a heel with my shorts and often wear a nice lightweight cashmere sweater and boots with my shorts as well transition into pre-fall.
