There's a particular daydream that seems to live in the dna of every Texan: the one where the phone goes quiet (or diasppears altogether), the boots come out, and the horizon stretches so wide you forget the nine-to-five. Call it the dude ranch fantasy. Call it the pull of the open range. Call it whatever your grandmother used to call that look you got in your eye every time a Willie song played.

Whimsy doesn't always arrive dressed in pastels and ephemera. Sometimes it shows up in worn leather and woodsmoke, in the creak of a screen door.
